If there’s a town in Colorado that’s really bustling in the month of December, it’s Breckenridge. The quaint town of Breckenridge is renowned for its ski resort and holiday festivities that look and feel like they came straight out of a postcard. In addition to the cozy and welcoming Christmas lights lining Main Street, Victorian-style architecture from the 1800s, fresh white powdery snow, and horse carriage rides, Breckenridge boasts a handful of holiday events that significantly add to the winter wonderland experience the town has to offer. We decided to feature the following three Breckenridge holiday events as our favorites simply because these events are truly memorable and cannot be missed.
1. Race of the Santas
December 3, 2016. This is one of the yearly events in Summit County much anticipated by the locals. It takes place on the first weekend in December every year. This year, it will benefit a local charity called Adopt an Angel. You will see over 400 participants, all of whom are adults donning Santa suits, maneuvering through a course stretched out for six blocks. There is a cookie and milk station along the way, and the top winners of the race will be crowned with Ullr helmets and given other prizes. Both locals and visitors can participate and/or help a participant raise money for the charity. This race has raised at least $8,000 for various charities since the tradition began. 2. Lighting of Breckenridge
December 3, 2016. Nothing shows off Breckenridge’s small town charm than the Lighting of Breckenridge. Locals and visitors alike gather together right after sunset to watch the massive Christmas tree next to the Breckenridge Welcome Center light up for the season. It’s a great way to top off a day full of festive events like the Race of the Santas, dance shows, holiday carols, and the Bernese Mountain Dog Parade. Be sure to head over to the Blue River Plaza for some free hot cocoa and cookies at 4:30!
3. Torchlight Parade
December 31, 2016 (New Years Eve). Head over to town to watch the folks from the Breckenridge Ski & Snowboard School glide down from the top of Peak 9 while carrying torches. Watching them illuminate the entire mountain after dark is really something to write home about. Even better, stick around until 9:00 PM and you will get to enjoy the fireworks, too!
